Radical Poker Players

May 1st 2008

Occasionally you will find extreme players. The most common, perhaps, is the maniac who likes to raise every hand. In a no limit game it can be quite profitable to trap the table by limping in when this player is expected to raise, allowing them to raise and get loose callers and then reraising a significant amount. Against very aggressive opponents you must be willing to embrace higher levels of variance and if you are going to fold against them, do so early on in the hand. Way Ahead / Way Behind lines can be extremely profitable against very aggressive players, but make sure you only take these lines when your opponent is drawing to three outs or less - on a board with more draws you will want to take a more aggressive line.

Against very passive players, or rock tight players in general, you can adapt by simply folding when they raise or bet. Loose passive players are one of the most profitable types to play against if you are tight and aggressive, because you will be able to fold when you are behind and they will pay you off when you are ahead.

Radical Players can run you over if you do not make adaptations to their play. You should not make tight folds against an insane bluffer nor should you make a light call down against a very loose and passive player who is unlikely to bluff. You shouldn't value bet very lightly against a passive and tight player, because they will often end up calling with a better hand. Conversely, the looser your opponent the lighter you should value bet.

It is also important not to over adapt to incomplete reads. Some players like to appear like a maniac but are actually solid players - in which case it might be a bad idea to give them undue action.
